MOG 2011 - 1st to 3rd July
With over 700 Morgans in the car park on Sunday it can be safely said that MOG 2011 at Newmarket was a great success. Congratulations must go to the Anglemog Committee and all their helpers for organising such a smoothly run event. They even appeased the Rain Gods a remarkable feat considering the weather earlier in the week.
The choice of the Rowley Mile Conference Centre proved an excellent choice with ample space for all the events taking place but all within easy distance of each other. I wasn't around on the Friday but on Saturday visitors had a choice of scenic runs, a visit to the National Stud, a cruise on a Thames Sailing Barge and a variety of other local attractions. Choosing the longest of the scenic runs available was certainly not a mistake as it took us through some beautiful countryside and charming villages. A visit to Flatford Mill the location for Constable's The Haywain (see photos) was enjoyable. As were the cakes at the National Trust cafe nearby.
On Sunday there was a good selection of trade stands and craft stalls to encourage you to empty your piggy bank. The Gymkhana went on for a good part of the day and seemed to be enjoyed by competitors and spectators alike. A Pitstop Challenge proved equally entertaining particularly the cheerleaders who encouraged the members of their team with some very inventive lyrics.
The Concours attracted a good selection of cars and one can only marvel at the dedication of the owners to present their vehicles is such pristine condition. I regret to say that I 'chickened out' after my attempt last year at Buxton but I doubt my efforts would have troubled the judges. My only consolation was that the 'Car of the Show' was called William!
In addition to the Concours cars and in celebration of the Club's Diamond Jubilee in 2011 an interesting collection of cars spanning the years was on show. TOK 258 was also in attendance as was the new 3-wheeler.
To add to the enjoyment there was a birds of prey display and for our delectation Robert Webb provided musical interludes during the day.
