Competition

MSCC LinMog Walcot Car Trial 28th August 2011

Words by Laurie Povey.

By 9.30 the organisers, marshals and competitors were relaxing with hot drinks, jelly babies and choccy biscuits ready for the final briefing before we went off to the hills for what promised to be a really good day’s motor sport. With scrutineering completed and cars on their way we marshals took our places for the first round.

It is always a feature of Walcot that the weather plays a critically important part in determining the difficulty of the course and overnight rain had left us with a slippery grassy surface to contend with in the first round. Still, gold shines through and the Mackays, father Colin and son Andrew, with Niall Maloney headed the field as we went into the 2nd round.

The Plus 4s had had a particularly tough start but good 2nd rounds from the Baileys and Tim Hawson made the scores look more respectable but the leaders performed even better so at the halfway point Niall led from Colin and Andrew with Jane Ledgerwood at their heels. The sun and wind dried out the hills to the extent that the Clerk of the Course, aided by his marshals, altered the post position to further challenge the competitors.

The start of the 3rd round did little to stop the leaders although Bruce Robinson and Andrew Mackay were the only ones to clean all the hills. Now Niall led from Andrew by only 1 penalty point. The final round showed Walcot at its most benign with spectacular results from the 4/4s and a total of 6 competitors going clear on all the hills.

Niall Maloney took the Ledgerwood Cup with a tally of only 22 penalties. The 4/4 class was won by Jane Ledgerwood by the narrowest of margins from Peter McDonald. They both scored 29 but the tie was resolved because Jane had cleared more hills than Peter. He was later to be consoled with the Novice Tankard award.

The Plus 4 class was a family affair with Chris Bailey taking the win by only one point from Michele; the consolation for her was winning the Ladies’ award. Families were to the fore again with the Plus 8s, son Andrew Mackay winning the class by 2 points from dad Colin.

Our grateful thanks go to Phil and Joyce Ledgerwood for allowing us the use of their Walcot fields and for sponsoring the event. Thanks also go to the Pre-War Austin 7 Club, marshals, scrutineers scorers, refreshment crew and all the other people without whose efforts this event simply would not have taken place.
